Cadmium and Plants

چکیده
s Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that enters the environment through various anthropogenic sources, and inhibits plant growth and development. Cadmium toxicity may result from disturbance in plant metabolism as a consequence of disturbance in the uptake and translocation of mineral nutrients. Plant nutrients and Cd compete for the same transport-ers and, therefore, presence of Cd results in mineral nutrients deficiency. The optimization of mineral nutrients under Cd stress could reduce Cd toxicity by greater availability at the transport site resulting in reduced accumulation of Cd, and could also alleviate Cd-induced toxic effects by enhancing biochemical reactions and physiological processes in plants. In the present review the role of plant macro, micro and beneficial elements in alleviating Cd stress in crop plants is discussed.

Phytoprotective influence of bacteria on growth and cadmium accumulation in the aquatic plant Lemna minor.
Certain plants are known to accumulate heavy metals, and can be used in remediation of polluted soil or water. Plant-associated bacteria, especially those that are metal tolerant, may enhance the total amount of metal accumulated by the plant, but this process is still unclear. In this study, we investigated metal enhancement vs. exclusion by plants, and the phytoprotective role plant-associate...

Heavy metal contamination of soil, water and air has caused serious environmental hazard in the biosphere due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. A variety of metal binding ligands such as organic acids and amino acids involve in the heavy metal remediation mechanisms by plants. This paper analyses the possible role of amino acid histidine and organic acids, namely, citric, oxalic and ...
متن کاملThe effect of cadmium on growth and composition of essential oils of Mentha piperita L.
Cadmium is a non-essential element that induces various toxic responses in plants when accumulated above the threshold level. The aim of the present research was to study the effect of cadmium on growth factors, concentration of cadmium in the rhizomes and leaves, and quality and quantity of essential oils in the leaves of Mentha piperita L. The experiment was carried out in a completely random...
متن کاملPerformance of purslane (Portulaca oleracea) in nickel and cadmium contaminated soil as a heavy metals-removing crop
Specific plants can remove heavy metals from the soil and contribute to pollution remediation in cropping systems. Determining the level of highest heavy metals that a super-accumulator crop can withstand without reducing its yield is important for management. The objective of this study was to investigate the heavy metal-removing capacity of purslane by studying different stress criteria and b...
متن کاملInhibition of nitrate transporter 1.1-controlled nitrate uptake reduces cadmium uptake in Arabidopsis.
Identification of mechanisms that decrease cadmium accumulation in plants is a prerequisite for minimizing dietary uptake of cadmium from contaminated crops. Here, we show that cadmium inhibits nitrate transporter 1.1 (NRT1.1)-mediated nitrate (NO3 (-)) uptake in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and impairs NO3 (-) homeostasis in roots. In NO3 (-)-containing medium, loss of NRT1.1 function in...
